Unless otherwise stated, all historical dates are given according to the Julian calendar,
which was used in England until 1752.
During the 17th century, the Julian calendar was 10 days behind the Gregorian
calendar, which was used in many European countries. It's got the "Army of the Confederate States of America"
header of the form scratched out (which may be interpreted to mean that the unit was not yet in Confederate
service).
These factors led to one of the greatest inflationary periods in America, particularly in the
South.
By the War's end, Confederate notes were worthless and many people bartered or used black
market Union issues as a medium of exchange. Included are selections that may be of particular
interest.
We intend to add additional dates as further translation is completed. The spelling of the
memoirs and diary has not been changed except where necessary for clarity. The "events" section covers events
in Richmond that do not relate to a particular site.

This collection includes transcripts and scanned images of correspondence that contains
testimonials of Thompson's services to the Federal government and her subsequent post-war struggles against
